Review of 2 Guys 2 Guitars from Real Roots Cafe in The Netherlands. By Fred Schmale
Danny Britt & Marvin Dykhuis, Two guys, two guitars (Independent, Reddawg Musig #4)The title’s homeliness is equal to the wonderful homeliness of the beautiful singersongwritermusicon this CD. But don’t be mistaken: these guys from Austin are incrediblygood in what they do. Marvin, born and raised in Wisconsin and living in Austin since theearly eighties, we know so well because of his decennialong work with Tish Hinojosa, inAustin Marvin is a popular sideman. He played with hundreds of musicians over the yearsand recorded and produced many CD’s in his wonderful studio next to his amazing homeclose to Austin’s city limit. Modest Marvin produced his first solo-CD a couple of years backthat sold incredibly well (to his bewilderment) during his and Tish’s tour in The Netherlands inNovember 2011.Danny Britt is born and raised in Kentucky, where he learned to play anything from bluegrassvia country to clasical music and rock ’n roll. He lives in Texas since 1980. In the eighties hewas Jerry Jeff Walker’s tour manager for a couple of years. After that he became asinger/songwriter in his own right, with three beautiful solo-CD’s so far, his debut in 2001 wasproduced by…. Marvin Dykhuis. Marvin and Danny are friends for live and together they playa large number of gigs a year. Their concerts are always the very picture of relaxed joy ofplaying, both guys sing beautifully and are skilled guitar players. Between all the gigs assideman and together they found a little time to record a number of self-penned songs anddid so in just one day, June 8 2012. Ten songs were recorded, five Britt-originals, onecowritten song and four by Marvin, who always cowrites songs. The bonus is a cover of asong (‘High Hill’) by the deeply regretted Champ Hood, one of the cult heroes of Uncle Walt’sBand, Lyle Lovett’s favorite band at the end of the seventies, when he was starting as asinger-songwriter.Marvin and Danny, one of Austin’s best duo’s, treat you to a delightful menu on thissympathetic CD. Listen to 11 juwels, with a special mention for the naughty waltz ‘She onlydrinks whiskey in the morning’ (Britt), the lazy jazzy ‘Spend the day with you’ by Marvin(cowritten with singer Lee Duffy), the subtle ‘Tu cancion’ (by Marvin and Tish: ‘You neverasked me why I love you, you never asked me why I feel the way I do. And if you would askme why I feel so happy I would say it’s just because you love me too’) and the most beautifulof them all, written together: ‘Warm summer wind’. A CD to play over and over again and
